Founded in 1866, the hospital moved to new purpose-built premises on Upper Maudlin Street in April 2001. Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal raised £12 million through public subscription. The NHS funded the remainder of the £30 million costs.

The hospital serves a population of around 6 to 7 million children covering an area from Cornwall to Gloucestershire and from South Wales to Dorset. Every year it treats over 70,000 children.

The hospital is the first children’s hospital in the UK to be purpose-designed for children incorporating three main design elements:

  • The child’s perspective of the world around them is reflected throughout.
  • The interesting and secure environment reduces fear and tension.
  • The vital role played by the family in the treatment of the child is recognised.
